“This will grow on me”
Something a lot of us have probably said whenever a new change happens with all these big tech companies. Take discord for example, who somehow manages to fuck up their UI and make it some abomination over and over, refusing to listen to their users. It feels like every time something changes that we dont like, we seem to just settle for what is given to us. Sure, most people will make a fuss and an outrage will happen when it comes to things like this, and eventually change is made, but isn’t it crazy how that needs to happen for the people to feel like they have a say in what a platform does?
Maybe some people might think we’re entitled, that people complaining about what a company does isn’t fair. It is their company after all, so why should we have any say over what they change.
It’s because large monopolies dont care what the people want, they just know they have all the control and nobody can stop them.
It’s hilarious that the EU had to forcefully make apple change the way they operate for apple to actually do something different for once. They were never going to change to a different USB charging port, nor would they have allowed for sideloading of all things.
EU formally adopts law requiring Apple to support USB-C chargers
Apple is bringing sideloading and alternate app stores to the iPhone
Apple, being a giant pain in the ass to have any customization with, only complied with these laws otherwise they’d be losing a huge market share of users in Europe
Members of the jailbreaking community wait for years for developers to make any kind of breakthrough. It’s gotten to the point where some time ago apple made their filesystem rootless. In iOS 15, apple made changes to the filesystem’s organization, specifically by making the system partition read-only and separating the data and system spaces. More info on rootless here
The most recent jailbreak was achieved on iOS 16.5 and its unlikely we will see anything else in the future.
Android does have the leg up on customization, but it’s the way these companies operate that really make me wonder why so many people will settle for less. Lightning cable has been so outdated for so long yet a good majority of consumers didn’t mind because they weren’t aware of the alternatives.
Don’t settle for less.
